In the Clouds

From Wikipedia.org:

"...The term propeller head...appears to derive from a "head in the clouds" type stereotyping of more technically aware people (compare with geek, nerd, absent-minded professor, etc.) or possibly from the propeller beanie. The term may be meant or taken as slightly pejorative but is usually meant with some respect."

Bubble, Bubble!

Fillet of a fenny snake, in the cauldron boil and bake: eye of newt and toe of frog, wool of bat and tongue of dog, adder's fork and blind-worm's sting, lizard's leg and howler's wing, for a charm of pow'rful trouble, like a hell-broth boil and bubble. -- Second Witch, "Macbeth," IV:1

It could be worse...my brother got turned into pie filling!

October is Mom's favorite month.  She really likes this time of year and always decorates the house and yard with stuff that has an "Autumnal" theme, which of course includes lots of Halloween decorations.

Vista and Me, Part III

Now that I had most of my "legacy" applications running under Win Vista, it was time to turn my attention to the drivers.  The only drivers that were installed to date were those that came with the system, which included drivers for an HP F4280 multipurpose printer.  I had two older printers (an HP 952C and an Epson CX3810) that I needed to find 64-bit drivers for.  So off I went to hp.com and epson.com respectively and found 64-bit drivers for both.  I installed the drivers and both printers were now up an running under Win Vista 64-bit.

Back to School!

World Trade Center, Pentagon, Shanksville...This month's page is dedicated to the victims and the heroes of September 11, 2001.

It's "Back to School" month.  I'm in sixth grade this year and Owen is in third grade.  We go to different schools this year as 6th grade is the first year of Middle School.

Granny had a good time at the American Legion National Convention last month, but she slipped in a step in the hotel and hurt her back.  She is doing fine now, but her back was really sore for a couple of weeks.

Mom went to see John McCain and Sarah Palin at a political rally in Fairfax City, VA last week.  There were lots of people there.

See you next month...

Vista and Me, Part II

tags:

In Part I, I had just taken delivery of my new desktop loaded with Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Patch 1 (SP1).  Once I got all the cabling done, it was time to turn the power on and let Vista do its thing.  Vista Home Premium ran through its initial setup and did a reboot with no problems incurred along the way.  I then installed the upgrade to Vista Ultimate, connected to the Internet and downloaded and installed the latest updates from the Microsoft.  Now it was time to find out just how many of my "legacy" applications would indeed run in a Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit environment.

I was planning on buying a new PC for a while now.  As I thought about just what hardware and software configuration I wanted, it occurred to me that there was one important decision that I had to make.  The decision wasn't about the PC hardware as this stuff is pretty much commoditized these days.  Rather it was regarding the operating system.  I'm well-versed in both Windows and Linux, but truth be told, most of the applications and tools I use on a day-to-day basis are Windows-centric.  I'm still not convinced that Linux is ready for prime time as my desktop operating environment.

That left me with the choice of continuing on with Win XP or finally dealing with Win Vista.  In the past I had been an "early adopter" of the various incarnations of Windows through the years, starting with the first semi-decent release (Win 95) way back when.  But I was really hesitant to migrate to Vista.  It wasn't due to all the negative press and Vista bashing on forums and blogs.  Those of us who have been around for a while heard many of the same complaints about Win XP.

Family Reunion 2008

With our cousin Austin at the family reunion...

On the first Saturday of the month, we attended the annual family reunion at the Mon Valley YMCA in Carroll Township, PA.

We enjoyed seeing all of our aunts and uncles, and our cousin Austin, who lives near St. Louis, MO.  And Pop-Pop had his usual good times with his brothers.

Granny is going to the American Legion National Convention in Phoenix, AZ this month.  Maybe she will bring back some neat souvenirs for us!

Summer is almost over so Mom and Dad will be closing down the pool next month and we will be heading back to school at the end of this month.  I will be in sixth grade this year and Owen will be in third grade.

See you next month...

at Niagara Falls

On the road again...

The first stop on our latest road trip was at the annual "Reinhardt Brothers" Reunion.  This year the reunion was in Howland Township, Ohio, and was hosted by our Great Uncle Barry and Great Aunt Lucy.  A really good time was had by all (Us kids, Mom, Dad, Granny, Pop-Pop, Uncle Barry, Aunt Lucy, Uncle Brian and Aunt Rosemary).  We took a day trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH.  We also saw the Cleveland Indians ballpark and Cleveland Browns stadium, one of the big cargo ships they use on the Great Lakes, and the Great Lake that Cleveland borders on.

The next stop on our road trip was Niagara Falls.  We were there for a couple of days, saw all the sights on both the Canadian and US sides, and then it was on the road again.  We stayed overnight in Bradford, PA, home of the world famous Zippo lighter.   We were near there at a friend's hunting cabin two summers ago.  In Bradford, we ate at the Beefeaters Restaurant.  We then headed back home and were glad to see that "Welcome to Virginia" sign after crossing the Point of Rocks Bridge, as that meant we were only about 15 miles from home.

We also had some house guests later in the month.

Gunny and Piggy (aka the Terrible Terriers) came to stay with us for a few days while Granny and Pop-Pop went on their annual trip to the Jamboree in the Hills.

And Pop-Pop, Granny and the Doggies stayed with us the last weekend of the month while Mom and Dad took care of some important business in Fredericksburg, VA.  Granny took Ross to see the new Batman movie (The Dark Knight) and bought Owen a new game for his Nintendo.

See you next month...

Happy Father's Day to Dad, Pop-Pop and Papa!

Ms. Robingutter birds

"No more pencils, no more books, no more teacher's dirty looks..."

We have new tenants.  A pair of Robins have built a nest on top of a decorative wreath Mom has hanging on the front porch.  And at Granny's house, some birds have built a nest in the gutter!

See you next month...
